How to Create a Blog - Blog Platforms

A blog is a type of website, so creating one will involve some form of web design. Thankfully there are standalone and online blog building software that makes everything easy. These software that simplifies the building of blogs are called blog platforms. You do not have to create a blog from scratch, all you need is to choose a blog platform that meets your unique needs and build your blog with it.

What are Blog Platforms

Blog platforms are software that enable a blogger easily build and manage a blog. They enable you create a blog and also makes writing and editing on your blog very easy. To create a blog with a blog platform, you do not need to know lots about web design technologies like HTML and CSS, though a little knowledge will help.

Blog platforms offer templates that you can easily customise to create a unique look and feel for your blog. While some offer a simple drag and drop or WYSIWYG interface, others will require that you have some knowledge of coding to use them. What all blog platforms will help you do easily is to write, format, and edit your posts, as well as add photos and videos.

What is your Blog Platform Choice

There are many blog platforms, but I will narrow down your choice to two Wordpress and Blogger. Of course, there are others like TypePad and Movable Type, however Blogger and Wordpress are the most popular blog platforms. When choosing a blog platform, you have two choices hosted/online blog platform or a standalone blog platform.

Hosted/Online blog platforms are hosted online. They are a lot easier to use. Using them is as simple as using any other online service like your email or Facebook. They are designed for simplicity and require no knowledge of web technologies. With hosted blog platforms, you do not need to worry about hosting as your blog is hosted free once created.

Hosted blog platforms also offer a free subdomain name, although with a little fee you can use your own domain name for your blog. The only complaint that some bloggers have on hosted blog platforms is that they are less customisable. Hence, bloggers who are customisation freaks often go for standalone blog platforms.

To use a standalone blog platform, you must have a web hosting account, which you will have to pay for. You also need to buy a domain name. You can download the blog platform and install it on the server of your host. However, most hosting services already have blog platforms on their sites all you need is install them. Most of these hosting services provide an easy one click installation for blog platforms.

Setting up and customising a standalone blog platform takes a lot of work and require some knowledge of web technologies, but is worth the effort, because of the flexibility and control they offer. Standalone blog platforms give you more control to customise your blog.

So hosted/online blog platforms offer simplicity and ease of use, but with some limitation on blog customisation, while standalone blog platforms offer limitless possibilities, with some complexities. So, make your choice and create a blog.

Blogger is a hosted/online blog platform while Wordpress is available in hosted/online and standalone blog platform variants.

Converting Low Bounce Rate on Blogs & Websites

Low bounce rate is desired by most bloggers and web publishers. This is because it is used to measure the engagement of a blog or website. But, do not forget why you want an engaging website or blog in the first place. Blog engagement is a journey, not a destination. The aim of an engaging blog or website is to convert visitors into customers.

Every Click should count

Bounce rate is lowered by reducing the number of visitors that leave your blog without viewing another page. However, the additional page they view should count. Claiming low bounce rates with page views that bring no value to your blog or website is meaningless. In fact, it is better they bounce than incur additional cost in server time for you.

Placing meaningless links on a blog just to gain low bounce rate is not useful. Links should be added in such a way that when clicked they bring you closer to converting the visitor. To do that the link should answer likely questions generated by the referring page.

Creating content that converts

To make additional page views on your website useful, they need to be related to the referring page and offer additional information about its content. For example, an article or blog post about a product could include links to specs and reviews of the product as well as link to a shopping cart.

Your contact details and information about your social network presence should also be prominently positioned so that if the visitor does not convert now, you can still convert him later through your social media campaigns.

The point of these series of articles on bounce rate is to remind you of the bigger picture. As a blogger or web publisher you should not focus so much on signals, but understand why they exist. Bounce rate exists to help you measure the engagement of you blog or website, but the ultimate goal is to drive-up conversion.

The reason you want visitors to stay longer on your blog or website is to convert them and not just to reduce bounce rate. Low bounce rate is of no value without conversion. Focus your bounce rate reduction campaigns to making pages that will lead to conversion more accessible.

How to Reduce Blog & Website Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors to your blog or website that leaves without visiting another page on your blog or website. Although I have argued earlier that bloggers should not focus too much on bounce rate, you should not ignore it entirely.

The point of bounce rate is that it is a signal for measuring how engaging your site or blog is. A low bounce rate is often assumed to mean that visitors disapprove your website, so they cannot stand it and leave as soon as possible. However, in practice this is not always the case.

Bounces occur for different reasons; your job is to ensure your blog is engaging and not to focus on bounce rate. You should also ensure that when bounces occur you gain from it. For example, bounces due to affiliate marketing or CPC could have some financial benefit for a blog.

However, if you own a business website or sell on your site bounce rate is an important measure of engagement as the only link you want visitors on your website to click is the one that leads to conversion for your business. So if you want to reduce your bounce rate here are a few things to do on your website or blog.

Have a Clear Navigation

Make the navigation of your blog or website clear and simple. Do not try to be too creative, most web users do not have the time to waste trying to figure out how to navigate your blog. Use standard conventions for your navigation. And make sure your links can be navigated on all devices.

Recently I visited a website of an insurance company that I could not navigate on mobile because of the way the navigation was designed. I had no option than to leave. So, before shouting over how high your bounce rate is make sure the navigation on your blog or website is easy to use.

Link to related content

Visitors to your blog will not visit any other post on your blog or website if they find no link to take them there. You should provide link within your content pages that are related to the subject on the page or that will enable your visitor take action based on the content on the page or blog post.

For example, a product page should contain links to a gallery where visitors can view more photos of the product. It should also link to a shopping cart or a contact page so that visitors can take action for conversion. For a blog post, links to existing blog post that are related to current post should be added to new blog posts.

If users do not easily find an inbound link to click on they will leave without visiting any other page, resulting in a bounce.

Optimise your pages for keywords

If your content pages are not targeting the right keywords, most visitors coming through search will bounce back since your content is probably not what they were looking for. So to keep visitors on your site or blog, pay attention to keywords and ensure you are attracting the right crowd.

Do not just target keywords for the sake of it. Make sure that the contents on the page and links within your content pages satisfies the targeted keywords.

What Value is Low Bounce Rate to Blogs

One metric that bloggers usually watch when accessing the health of their blog is the bounce rate with the aim always being to make it as low as possible. However, a low bounce rate is not necessarily good news. It fact, it could mean missed opportunity to earn with your blog.

Your focus as a blogger is to develop good content on your blog what users do with your content is not entirely up to them. Metrics like keyword targeting, unique visits, traffic sources, time spent on site are far more important metrics for blogs than bounce rate or pages per visit.

So what is bounce rate?

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors that visit a page on a website and left without clicking another page on the website. So if a visitor enters your blog and do not click any link on your blog to view another page on your site it is regarded as a bounce.

Note that if the user clicks a link to another site on your blog, closes the browser, or spends enough time on a page for the session of your analytics software to timeout it will be regarded as a bounce.

So why is low bounce rate important?

The theory behind bounce rate is that bounces occur because visitors do not like your blog, or your blog is not engaging enough, is hard to navigate, or contains low quality content. Hence, bounce rate is often used as a scale to access how engaging a blog or website is. In such a scale low bounce rate means an engaging blog while high bounce rate means the opposite.

However, this simplistic view of bounce rate is not true for all types of websites, blogs especially. Bounces do not always occur because of disapproval of visitors. For example, a visitor clicking on an out bound link on your blog is not necessarily doing so because he hates your blog, but to get more information, which is why you included the link in the first. Note that Ads on your site and clicks to your social networking pages will also result in bounces.

Bounces contribute to pay day

Bloggers should not focus too much on bounce rate. Ads on your blog will result in bounces. So, if you use CPC or CPA advertising, they will result in bounces. Why complain about a bounce if it contributes to your pay day? Most bloggers are in it for the money.

Having too low bounce rate with CPC or CPA advertising means you are losing money or your Ads are not properly placed. It is time to monetise those low bounce rate. Remember, you may go out of business soon with your low bounce rate, if you do not make enough money on your blog to pay your bills.

Stop chasing low bounce rate

To have a perfect bounce rate on your blog you should avoid out bound links, write half hazard content with read more links all over the place, remove links to your social networking pages, and remove all ads. But what value will that add to your blog. Your focus should be writing quality content, proper keyword targeting, and easy navigation. These should be your focus not bounce rate.

Google Adsense Ads making money from your contents

Google Adsense is an online advertising serving service (Advertising network) that displays contextual cost per click (CPC) or Cost per Impression (CPM) Ads on websites. By contextual, we mean that Adsense Ads are tailored to match contents on your website or blog. That way the Ads are relevant and hence increases the user experience.

Web publishers who subscribe to Google Adsense make money when a visitor to their website finds an Ad so interesting as to click on it. Web publishers make money from Google Adsense when a cost per click Ad on their websites or blogs are clicked on by a visitor. The visitor is then taken to the website of the advertiser (landing page) for more information about the Ad.

In the case of cost per impression (or more accurately cost per thousand impression), the web publisher makes money once the Ad is fully loaded (also called impression), when the blog or website is visited. This occurs whether or not the Google Adsense Ad is clicked.

The publisher has no way of choosing between cost per click or cost per click. It is the advertisers that decides this. Some advertisers choose a combination of both Ads.

To make money with Google Adsense, here are a few guidelines:

Write purposeful content

Adsense Ads are tailored to match contents on your website. Adsense send crawlers to each page on your website to find out what your website is all about and then look for Ads within Google Adword network that best matches contents on your website. The only way Adsense crawler will know what your website is about is if you write purposeful web pages.

Purposeful pages target specific keywords. For Adsense Ads on your website to be properly matched by your content, you should target specific keywords. Writing web pages that do not have purpose will lead to Adsense Ads on your website not being properly matched with your content, which will lead to fewer clicks on such Adsense Ads as a result of irrelevance. Fewer clicks mean poor conversion or earnings. When Adsense Ads are relevant, they will tend to attract the interest of visitors leading to more clicks.

Good Ad placement will increase earnings

Making money on Adsense also depends on your Ad placement. Position your Adsense Ads where your visitors will see them. Of course, visitors to your website will not click on your Ads if they do not see them. Therefore, find out where your visitors eyes usually go when they visit your website and place your Adsense Ads in those locations.

Ensure that the first Ad unit appears in the hottest Ad space on your website. This is because Adsense display ads in order of their earning potential. So, ads on the first Ad unit will likely earn more than those on the second Ad unit and so on. So, by ensuring that Ads that earn more gets the most clicks, you can increase your current adsense earnings without any increase in traffic.

Use Adsense channels to find out which Ad units perform the best on your website. With Adsense channels, you can research on best Ad placements for your website.

Customise your Adsense Units

You should also customise your Adsense Ads to blend with contents on your website. However, you must not do this in a deceptive way. It is always a good idea to remove borders from your Adsense Ad units. Adsense links should have the same colour and background as other on your website. Your Adsense Ads should look as part of your website.

Other Adsense earning oppurtunities

So far, we have focused on how to make money from Adsense by placing Ads on your website, but there are more ways of making money from Adsense, Adsense for content is just one of it. Here is a brief on how other Adsense money making opportunities work. Future articles will highlight more on each method.

Making money from Adsense for search: in this method the web publisher places one or two search boxes on their website. When visitors search using that search box, Google Adsense will display Ads around search results. If the visitor clicks any Ads, the publisher makes money.

Making money from Adsense for Domains: if you have vacant domains, you can make money from them using Adsense for domains. Google will populate the site with Ads and you will make money if a visitor clicks on those Ads.

Making money from Adsense for Feeds: you can place adsense Ads on your website's feed, you make money when an Ad is clicked on .

Making money from Adsense for games: if you are an online game developer, Adsense allows you make money from your games. You allow visitors to play games online free, then use Ads to make money.

Making money from Adsense for mobile: if you have a mobile website, you can make money via Adsense for mobile.

How does Google Adsense work?

Google acts like middle man between advertisers and publishers. Advertisers use the Google Adword to setup their Ad campaign. In the Setup they select how-much they a willing to pay for a click or view, keywords they are interested in, regions of interest, and so on.

Publishers register via Google Adsense. Once accepted Adsense robots will crawl your blog or website for keywords. The blog will be matched with Ads from Adword with relevant keywords. If a visitor to a website clicks on an Adsense Ad, the advertiser is billed on Adword, while Google credits a share of this earning into the Adsense account of the publisher.

Adsense for Content Review

Google Adsense is an online advertising serving service that displays contextual Ads on websites. These ads are tailored to the content on each website and can either be pay per click or pay per impression. There are different Adsense formats, namely Adsense for content, Adsense for search, Adsense for games, Adsense for feeds, and Adsense for domains. This page will focus on Adsense for content, which is one of the most popular Adsense formats today.

Adsense for content comes in two forms namely Content Ad units and Link Ad units.

Adsense Content Ad units

Adsense Content ad units are very popular. Adsense for content ads are displayed directly on the website of the publisher. The Publisher creates and copies an Adsense code from the Adsense website and pastes same on the spot he wishes the ads to appear on his website. These Adsense ads may be in text, flash, image, or video. You can also choose from a wide range of ad units that can fit your website, from small ad units to medium ad units, from wide ad units to tall ad units. You can also customise ads to blend with your website.

There are two ways publishers can earn from the Adsense content ad unit, they are:
  • Pay per click, and
  • Pay per impression

In pay per click, the publisher makes money when a visitor clicks on an Adsense ad on the publisher’s website. In pay per impression clicks are not required, once an adsense ad that implements pay per impression is fully loaded the publisher will earn some money. Publishers cannot choose which of the methods ads displayed on their site must use. It is the advertiser that decides which method to use. Some advertisers use a combination of both methods.

If you are new to Adsense, content ads are the first type of Ad that you are likely to integrate on your website. This is because content Ads are easier to understand than other Adsense Ad formats.

Adsense Content Ads will display Ads tailored to contents on your website. For it to be effective, your website must be purposeful and written with your keywords in mind. If you write without using your keywords ads on your website will not be tailored to your content and this will result in low click-through rate.

Adsense allows publishers to place as many as 3 content Ad units on a web page. If possible use all three Adsense ad units on all your pages, this if done well will improve your earnings.

Adsense Link Units

New web publishers usually ignore Adsense link units, probably because they do not understand how it works. This is a big mistake. Link units display links to adsense ads on your website. If a visitor clicks on a link unit, the publisher does not earn immediately, rather the visitor is taken to a page where he will view Adsense ads related to the link clicked. The publisher makes money if this visitor clicks on any of the Adsense ads on the new page. Therefore, with link units you need two clicks to earn.

The links are made to match the content on your site. For example, if your page is optimised for the keyword mobile phones, your link ads may contain links like:
  • buy mobile phones
  • used mobile phones
  • Nokia mobile phones
  • mobile phones
For example, if your visitor clicks on buy mobile phones, he will be linked to Adsense ads related to buy mobile phones. If he clicks any of these ads, you will earn some money.

For Adsense link units to be effective they must be customised to blend to content on your website. Customise your Adsense link units to be the same colour and font as other links on your website. This will make visitors to see the ad links as part of your website. However, the link must be separated from other links on your website. Do not place it too near to existing links on your site.

You can have as many as 3 Link units on your website. If possible use all three Adsense link units on all your pages, this if done well will improve your earnings.

Do not ignore Adsense link units as they can add considerably to your Adsense earnings.

To make money from blogging you need to know words and phrases that people use when searching for your subject area in search engines. Those are your keywords. In fact, keyword analysis should determine the name of your blog; it should also determine the title of your posts. The volume of traffic depends on how high your blog ranks on important keywords in your industry or blog's theme on popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. A blog filled with quality contents and properly targeting relevant keywords will always rank better on search engines. Therefore, good keyword analysis will lead to good ranking, which leads to high traffic, and finally to more money. Register your blog with webmaster tools of Google, Bing, and Yahoo, and submit your sitemap.

Also open a Twitter account for your blog and share your posts there as well. Socialise with your fans on Facebook and Twitter with regular updates. Gradually your fan base on these social networking sites will increase and drive traffic to your blog.

You should also provide feeds for your visitors to subscribe to. Feeds will enable your visitors to subscribe to your blog if they find it interesting. Subscribers to your feeds will be alerted each time a new post appears on your blog. Subscribers to your feeds are your loyal visitors (customers) and can help spread information about your blog, so take them very seriously. Having feeds will generate additional traffic for your blog site.

Using Google Webmaster Tools for identifying your Potential Keywords

Google webmaster tools provide you with information about your top keywords on Google search. You get two lists of keywords. The list on your left includes the top 20 keywords that your pages appeared in on Google search. This list also informs you of your ranking on Google search for these keywords.

The list on your right includes the top 20 keywords that generated traffic to your website and your ranking on those keywords. These two-piece of information can be very useful in improving your ranking on Google. If you notice that there is very little in common between the left keyword list and the right keyword list then there is a call to action.

Note that the left list informs you of keywords that if you were ranking high on, you would have generated more traffic to your site. These are your gold mine keywords. Your right keywords however, are the keywords that are actually generating traffic to your website. Your objective when using this feature of Google webmaster tools is to make as many keywords as possible that appear in your left keywords list to appear in your right keywords list as well.

To achieve this you have to click on any of the keywords in your left list starting with the first, this will take you to a search page for that keyword showing pages ranking high on that keyword. Study those websites to find out why they are ranking high, and then write pages that will compete for those keywords. This will take time to achieve results. Your goal is to ensure that your right hand keywords list matches your left hand keywords list.

Focus each Website or Blog to a Theme

Do not develop a website or blog that talks about everything. Every website must have a purpose or theme. Do not put out contents on any subject on the same website. Making money from web publishing requires a purposeful website.

If you want to write on different subjects do that on different websites or blogs. However, do not have too many websites at their development stages. Make a success of one website, before developing a new one. Having too many websites than you can handle will deprive you the opportunity to develop a website rich in content, which is all you need to make money from web publishing.

Concentrating a website or blog on one subject (or niche) makes it easy to build a brand or reputation. It also improves your ranking on search engines, as search engines will easily understand your website. A purposeful website is also likely to have better targeted Ads. All this will result in your making reasonable amount of money for your effort.

Regularly update old contents - fresh content makes money

Visitors to websites usually prefer recent and relevant contents to their search terms. It is usually annoying to visit a website only to find outdated contents. Although having old contents may not affect your search engine ranking, it can affect your ability to leverage your high ranking. This is because most of your visitors will leave your site once they notice old contents this will affect how much money you make from Ads.

In order to continue making money from web publishing, you must regularly update old contents.

You should not just focus on developing new contents; your old contents must also be regularly updated. With time, some contents on your pages will be outdated. You can delete outdated pages but I prefer updating contents on my old pages. Sometimes, it may not be practical to update contents on an outdated page; in such a case, you may be tempted to delete such a page. However, I recommend that you write a newer version of the page, and link to it from your older version. This way any visitor to the old page that finds your older page outdated will have an option of visiting the more recent version.

For example if you have a specification page on Toyota Corolla 2006, and you want to write a specification page for Toyota Corolla 2009, you do not need to delete the contents on older page. Simply, write a new page on Toyota Corolla 2009 and put a link to it in your Corolla 2006 page. This ensures that people looking for the latest Toyota Corolla models who are taken to the older Corolla 2006 page can connect to your fresh Corolla 2009 page.

Some pages may look useless, like a page on an expired promotion by a company. You may decide to delete such a page, but what I will do, is to look for recent promotions by the same company or by other companies and write new contents about recent promotions. I will then link to these more relevant pages from the outdated page. I will place the links to the newer posts as high as possible in the outdated post so that any visitor who visits the outdated page will find links to more recent and relevant promotions contents.

Traffic is hard to come by, so anything you can do to avoid deleting an outdated page should be done, especially if it is adding to your overall traffic. Imagine deleting a page that account for traffic of up to 100 visitors every month, just because its contents are outdated. Delete a page only if it is extremely necessary.

Note that changes in structure and contents of your website can lead to changes in the keyword index of some or all of your pages, so do keyword indexing of your pages each time you change your page structure or contents significantly. You may have to edit your contents i.e. increase the frequency of your primary keyword; or reduce the frequency of primary keyword.

Increase the frequency of your primary keyword if the structural change resulted in a reduction in your primary keyword’s index. Likewise, reduce the frequency of your primary keyword if the change increased the index.

If you had published contents that because of time is no longer accurate, edit it in order to reflect the new reality on ground. Assuming, you publish prices of some product online and prices have changed, you should edit the page to reflect the new prices. Read your old contents and access their relevance, edit them to be more relevant. When editing your old contents, take note of your primary keyword and your overall keyword index.

Poor ranking on your major keywords will always result in low traffic to your website, which means little money.

Tips on new content: Finding ideas - keywords logs media

The first place to look for new ideas for future contents is your keywords list. Your keywords list should inspire you to develop new contents. Your keywords list will help you find out keywords you have covered and those you are yet to cover. Make sure you cover all keywords in your relevant keywords list. This is one reason why you need to develop a keywords list before launching a website.

You should also look at your keywords logs. Your keywords logs give you a list of keywords that directed visitors to your website via search engines. These keywords are called your active keywords. Your active keywords must be downloaded on your PC for storage. These keywords will tell you what your visitors are searching for on your website. If you find keywords not properly covered by your website, develop new contents to cover such keywords.

New ideas can come from mainstream media. Look for magazines, journals, newsletter, and newspapers that discuss the topics you provide contents on. You will find new ideas in such print media. Adverts in print media can also inspire you to write new contents. Some newspapers focus on special topics on certain days, so find out on what days popular newspapers focus on the topics you provide content on, and flip through for new ideas.

Do not copy what is in the print media, although it may be easy, it is unethical and will be ineffective. Note that writing for the internet is different from writing for print media. The content you are copying will probably not be optimised for search engines. In addition, copying other people’s work will deprive you of the opportunity to learn how to generate quality web copies, which will in the long run undermine your success.

You should also use electronic media like TV, cable, radio, and satellite. Note programmes that focus on your industry and always tune in to find out what is being discussed. You will discover new ideas during such programmes. Also, look for cable and satellite channels that focus on your industry and always find interesting and informative programmes to tune in.

What are Keywords to Web Publishers

Keywords are important words in a page. These words bring traffic to a website via search engines. Keywords are words that internet surfers usually enter in search engine search-bars when they searching for information on the internet. Writing for the internet is all about keywords. To succeed as a web publisher, you must identify keywords relevant to your industry and provide contents targeted at those keywords.

Most people depend on search engines when searching for information online. This means that if a search engine does not index your website or your website is not ranking high on search engines, you will get very little traffic to your website. Having your website indexed is easy, but ranking high on search engines is a tough task.

For your website to rank high, your pages must be purposeful. The easiest way of writing purposeful pages is to target keywords that people who are searching for information contained in your page would enter in a search engine search-bar.

Search engines use keyword index to predict what your web page is about. Keyword index of a word in a page is the ratio of the frequency of that word to the total number of words in a page. Keyword index of between 0.02 (2.0%) and 0.06 (6.0%) are recognised by search engines. Therefore, when targeting keywords ensure that your keyword of interest is within this range.

Keywords are very important to web publishers. You cannot make money as a web publisher if you do not target popular keywords in your industry. Each page on your website should target one keyword.

Now we will go through the different keyword types that web publishers come across.

    Raw Keywords

Raw keywords are your first keywords. Raw keywords are keywords that you generate with common sense. It is a guess and is unrefined. You should not base your pages on raw keywords. Raw keywords should be generated before writing each page, but should be analysed to find more refined keywords that are relevant. Before you start any website, you must first generate raw keywords relevant to your industry.

You can generate raw keywords by yourself or with the help of friends and colleagues. For example if you intend to launch a website that provide information on cars, some of your raw keywords may include:

    • Car

    • Toyota

    • Toyota Corolla

    • Car reviews

    • Car specs

Raw keywords are raw materials and should be researched on to find out those that are relevant.

    Relevant Keywords

Relevant keywords are refined keywords. They are the result of keyword analysis on your raw keywords. Relevant keywords are words that people actually enter in search bars when searching for information online. You identify relevant keyword by using a keyword analysis tool like Google Insights, which will give ideas of your relevant keywords.

Simply enter each of your raw keyword in a keyword analysis tool like Google Insights and the tool will reveal how searchers use such a keyword. For example, entering the raw keyword Car may reveal relevant keywords like:

    • Cars

    • Car insurance

    • used cars

    • Car reviews

    • Car hire

These are the keywords you should actually target when writing copies on your website. You can also do a further keyword analysis on all these keywords to discover keywords that are more refined.

    Active Keywords

Active keywords are words that actually bring visitors to your website. You can look up your active keywords in your keyword log. You can use a tool like Google Analytics to lookup your active keywords. Active keywords give you an idea of what visitors to your website are looking for. With this information, you can determine if you are satisfying their needs.

Compare your active keywords with your relevant keywords. If they match each other, it means you are doing very well. If there is a huge disparity then you still have a lot of work ahead of you. However, note that it takes time before you can properly rank high on your relevant keywords.

Google webmaster tool provides you with a list of keywords that brings the most visitors to your website on Google search. Improve your targeting on these keywords.

    Potential Active Keywords

Potential active keywords are keywords that your website appears on, but because it is ranking low, they are not bringing visitors to your website. Let us say, your website is number 50 on the keyword Nokia. That is good news but you will notice that because your website appears on the 5th page your website will not get visitors to your website via this keyword.

Google webmaster tools gives you two lists of keywords the first are words in which your website appear the most on Google search (list A). The second list is a list of the top 20 keywords that bring visitors to your site (list B/active keywords).

List A are keywords that if you rank high on them will bring you more traffic, while list B are those that are currently bringing you traffic. Compare your list A and list B if they match then you are doing very well. Keywords that appear on list A but do not appear on list B are your potential active keywords. You should research on why you are not performing well on these keywords. When you discover the problem, solve it and more visitors will be coming to your website.

Note that you should not be happy just because list A and B matches, you should look at the placement of each keyword in the two lists. For example, if a keyword appears in number 1 position on list A but on number 3 position on list B it means that you still have some work to do. The ideal is that keywords in the two lists should also match in position.

    Popular Keywords

Popular keywords are words that are popular in your industry. You should write web copies covering these keywords. However, you must note that it takes quite a long time before you can start getting result on popular keywords. Therefore, you must see targeting popular keywords as a medium to long term investment.

One way of getting results immediately from popular keywords is to target them with identifiers. While it will be hard to get results targeting the keyword cars, targeting the keyword Toyota cars Chicago will be less difficult. In this case, the identifiers are Toyota and Chicago. Targeting longer keywords like this can help you get results immediately. However, do not forget that your major keyword is cars.

    Emerging Keywords

Emerging keywords are keywords that may become popular in a few weeks, months or years. As a web publisher, you must constantly monitor trends in your industry to identify emerging trends. Target emerging keywords on time and you will get results. Targeting keywords early can increase your chances of topping search ranking on those keywords.

Making money from web publishing is about how properly you can target keywords in your industry.
